Risperdal, also referred to by its generic name risperidone, is an antipsychotic drug used to treat mental conditions in adults, older children and young teens by altering the brain’s chemistry. Risperdal is produced by Johnson & Johnson. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first granted approval for the drug’s very particularized use in treating schizophrenia in adults. Risperdal was not originally approved for use in children or adolescents.
Janssen, now part of Johnson & Johnson, was accused and fined by the United States Department of Justice for marketing the drug for use by children with behavioral issues prior to Risperdal’s FDA approval for that purpose. FDA approval was never expanded enough to include all the purposes for which Risperdal was being marketed.
Risperdal was widely used off-label to treat children and adults with such behavioral conditions as:
- Autism
- Irritability
- Bipolar disorder
- Aggression
- Depression
- Sleep issues
Risperdal & Male Breast Growth
Risperdal causes an increase in the protein hormone prolactin, which causes lactation in mothers of newborns, and can stimulate breast tissue growth in adult and young males. Risperdal has been linked to gynecomastia, or male breast growth, in patients using the prescription. Johnson & Johnson has been accused of concealing the side effects of Risperdal, including weight gain, gynecomastia, stroke, and diabetes.
