In the late 1800s, the borough of Vandergrift, PA, was constructed for the iron and steel workers employed by Apollo Iron and Steel Company (“Apollo”). Over time, Vandergrift Works has been owned by several companies. It is currently owned by Allegheny Ludlum Steel and employs approximately 240 workers.

In 1895, Apollo Iron and Steel Company (“Apollo”) constructed the Vandergrift Works along the Kiskiminetas River. Apollo was acquired by the U.S. Steel Corporation in 1901. At various points during its operation, U.S. Steel was reorganized and Vandergrift Works was operated by various U.S. Steel subsidiaries, including the American Sheet Steel Company, American Sheet & Tin Plate Company and Carnegie Illinois Steel Corporation.
Allegheny Ludlum Steel (ATI) purchased the mill in the 1980s. ATI has operated as many as 11 steel mills in Pennsylvania, including the Vandergrift Works facility. The other ATI locations include Brackenridge, Latrobe, Bagdad, Monaca, Midland, Natrona Heights, Oakdale, Rochester, Washington and Zelienople, PA.
Producing hot and cold-rolled steel sheets and other products, Vandergrift Works has employed as many as 3,000 workers. Currently, due to improved technological advancements, Vandergrift Works employs around 240 workers.
