Stauffer Chemical built the sulfuric acid plant in Baton Rouge in the 1940s. Later, in the late 1960s, Stauffer constructed an additional sulfuric acid regeneration unit. The plant has operated under different names since Stauffer was sold to Rhone-Poulenc in 1987. Since then, the plant has operated at various times under the names Rhodia, Inc., Solvay USA, and Eco Services Operations, LLC.

Stauffer Chemical was established in San Francisco in 1885. Stauffer built its Baton Rouge plant in the 1940s where it began manufacturing sulfuric acid for use in mining and industrial applications. Stauffer later constructed a new unit for regenerating sulfuric acid in 1969. The facility uses virgin sulfur, spent sulfuric acid and other materials to make sulfuric acid and is fueled by a mixture of natural gas and hazardous waste derived fuel.
Over the years, the plant has been owned by Stauffer, Rhone-Poulenc, Rhodia, Inc., Eco Services Operations, LLC, and Solvay USA.
