The Louisiana Legislature established the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans in 1896.  A government entity, the Port of New Orleans was given the responsibility of regulating the commerce and traffic of the port and harbor of New Orleans.  A wide variety of companies utilize the many wharves which are under the supervision of the Port of New Orleans.

The Port of New Orleans was established as a government entity in 1896 when the Louisiana Legislature created the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans.  Charged with maintaining and overseeing the port and harbor of New Orleans, the Port of New Orleans governed the control and use of docks, wharves and warehouses as well as managed the rules related to the loading and unloading of cargo by the various companies utilizing the port.
