Originally constructed by Lion Oil in 1954, the chemical plant has evolved and expanded over its 60 years of operation. Originally built to manufacture ammonia, the Monsanto plant now manufactures a variety of agricultural chemicals, including its glyphosate herbicide, Roundup®.

Located on 1,550 acres of the former Ellington Plantation, the Monsanto Chemical plant was first constructed and operated by Lion Oil. In 1955, Lion Oil merged with Monsanto and, in 1972, Monsanto became the full owner of the plant. Started as an ammonia plant in the 1950s, the plant has expanded over the 60-plus years of operation and is now a major supplier of agricultural chemicals such as the widely used herbicide, Roundup®. A major employer in the area, the plant currently employs as many as 1,000 employees and 1,000 contractors.
