Union Carbide, a fully owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, first began operating its Taft facility in 1966.  Approximately 650 acres of the 2,000-acre complex has been developed into chemical manufacturing facilities.  The plant, which produces a large volume of chemicals, employs as many as 2,500 employees and contractors.

Union Carbide opened its Taft facility in 1966.  In 2001, Union Carbide became a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company.  Sometimes referred to as the Taft/Star Manufacturing Plant, or as the St. Charles Operations of Dow Chemical, the large facility encompasses multiple complexes throughout the 2,000 acres on which it is located.  

Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year, the facility manufactures a large volume of chemicals which are widely used in household, business and consumer products, such as those found in plastics, insecticides, personal care products, and cleaning agents.  Still in operation, the facility employs as many as 2,500 workers and contractors.
