In the 1920s, Todd Shipyards announced their intention of building a small shipyard on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River in New Orleans and a larger one on the western side of the river in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans.  During its years of operations in New Orleans, Todd Shipyards employed anywhere from 800-4,000 workers.

At one time spanning more than 81-acres, the Todd Shipyard began operating in the 1920s.  During WWII, the facility handled as many as 14,271,386 tons of vessels as a result of several defense contracts.  Employing as many as 4,000 workers at a time, the shipyard was a significant employer of the area until the 1980s when the company eventually filed for bankruptcy in 1987. The area where the shipyard had been located has now been converted into a bike and pedestrian path.
