Although there is no cure for mesothelioma, today there are many clinical trials underway to test new drugs and procedures in an effort to control and someday, to cure this disease.
Clinical trials are research studies that seek to determine whether new approaches are safe and effective in preventing, diagnosing, and treating illness. Most clinical research involves testing of new drugs or different combinations of new drugs and other treatments.
Deciding whether or not to participate in a clinical trial is a highly personal matter. It is important to learn as much as possible about your disease and about the clinical trials that may be available before making this decision. Your treating physicians and family members should be included in gathering information, but the decision is ultimately the patient’s choice.
There are several benefits of taking part in clinical trials. You may receive health care from leading medical professionals in the field of cancer research and access to new drugs and other medical resources you might not otherwise have. However, there are some risks. New drugs are untested, and may have side effects, or be less effective than current medications, or be completely ineffective. Some new drugs and procedures may work for other patients and may not be effective against your illness. Again, the decision to participate is a highly personal one.
All clinical trials or studies are divided into different phases:
Phase I trials usually enroll a small number of people. Their overall purpose is to test how new drugs or procedures should be administered.
Phase II trials seek to provide early information about whether or not a new drug or procedure works and also give information about the safety and benefits of the drug or procedure.
Phase III trials compare promising new drugs or procedures with the current standard treatment. Large numbers of people from across the nation usually participate in Phase III trials and receive either the new treatment or the standard treatment.
Following is information on several current clinical trials -
