Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that strikes only 3,000 Americans every year, but that number does not matter when it strikes you or someone you love. What is known for sure about Mesothelioma is that its main cause is exposure to Asbestos

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was prized by the ancients for its ability to withstand high temperatures without burning.  It is the only mineral that can be woven into fabric and was used in thousands of ways in the workplace and in the home before its dangers were recognized. As the use of asbestos grew to enormous proportions in the United States, large numbers of workers became seriously ill.  In the 1930s, a series of lawsuits was launched and the battle of worker against indifferent corporations had begun.  The fight continues to this day, as asbestos manufacturers continue to deny, just as they did in the 1930s, that they knew there was a danger associated with asbestos exposure.

Among the millions of workers exposed to this toxic substance were those who labored in the ship building trades during World War II and in other trades.  Asbestos was also used in oil refineries, chemical factories, power plants, and other industrial sites. Construction workers were exposed to asbestos when it was used in pipe fitting, insulation of buildings, and more.

Exposure to asbestos is a deadly injury.  When the tiny fibers of asbestos are breathed in, they quickly move to the ends of the small air passages of the lungs and travel to lining of the lungs, where they do damage to the lining, known as the mesothelial cells.  If swallowed, the fibers reach the lining of the abdominal cavity, where they cause peritoneal Mesothelioma.

The numbers are chilling.  As many of two million Americans still alive will develop asbestos exposure disease, and a third of their wives, children and family members – estimated by some sources to be as high as 200,000 – have also been exposed.  Shipyard and construction workers who used asbestos are two groups whose health was placed in danger, but they are not alone.  School custodians working in old buildings where asbestos has not been cleaned out or cleaned property are at risk.  Construction workers who renovate or do demolition of old buildings are at risk.  Merchant seamen and others who are confined to ships built with asbestos products also develop signs of this disease.
